Bug Bite Soother Roll-On Just when we thought we were rid of them for this year, those biting pests were out in force! Here's what happens when we get "bit" by a mosquito: The mosquito sticks its proboscis into the skin to withdraw blood (like a syringe) from a small blood vessel called a capillary. Since less than 5% of the skin is blood vessel, it probes in 10-second intervals until it finds a capillary. Saliva from the mosquito contains an anti-coagulant to stop blood from clotting and interrupting its lunch! The body's immune system response to this anti-coagulant chemical is to release a counter-chemical of its own: histamine. Histamine causes blood vessels near the bite to enlarge which causes a red swollen area called a wheal. Histamine also irritates nerve endings in the skin, so this is why we itch. And the more we scratch, the more histamine is released, and the more we itch = vicious cycle! Too much information?! OK-this is what you can do about it: You can take an over-the-counter antihistamine (like diphenhydramine = Benadryl) which makes people sleepy (it's used as the sleeping medicine in pills like Tylenol PM). Many people are made non-functional by this medicine! You can use something that is natural, effective, and works locally-at the site of the bite! Bug Bite Soother Roll-On! Bug Bite Soother Roll-On goes on blue because it contains the essential oil derived from the plant called German Chamomile. When German Chamomile is steam distilled, the chemical chamazulene is released, and chamazulene (a powerful but safe and natural anti-inflammatory) is blue! The blue color will fade away as the soothing oil is quickly absorbed by the skin and begins to decrease the itching by calming the irritated nerve endings-to stop the scratch-itch-scratch cycle. This beautiful oil also has anti-histamine and analgesic (pain killing) properties, and also kills germs-perfect for our uses here! |
